Oil Pumps & Kits
What is an oil pump?
An oil pump is a important part of the engine lubrication system. The oil pump circulates oil under pressure to all parts of the engine that require it. Oil collects at the bottom of the engine in the sump (oil pan). As soon as the engine starts the oil needs to be pumped to the top of the engine and to all moving parts as quickly as possible. This is to lubricate the moving parts and prevent unnecessary wear or damage.
How do I choose the correct oil pump?
Generally speaking there are not too many variations when it comes to oil pumps for an engine. To be sure you get the correct pump we would recommend comparing any replacement part against the original (OE) part number. If you are not able to obtain the OE part number here are some factors to consider:
Vehicle manufacture date (this is not the date the vehicle was registered but the date it was made
Engine Code
Engine number sequence (up to or after as specific number/letter
VIN (chassis number) sequence (up to or after as specific number/letter
What brand of oil pump should I choose?
Makers of oil pumps are not as common as other serviceable parts. Having a choice of different brands is not always a possibility. These parts are precision engineered and design to match the original part exactly. Brand is not normally a consideration that you need to make. It is normally a case of is the correct pump available for your vehicle.
How can I tell my oil pump needs replacing?
Issues with your engine lubrication system should be investigated as a matter of urgency. Loss of oil pressure or any other oil related issue could lead to your engines critical components being starved of oil. This could lead to irreparable damage to the engine. We would always recommend that you have your vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to receive an accurate diagnosis.
Some of the symptoms of a failing or faulty oil pump are:
Oil warning light on the dash
Engine runs hotter than normal or even overheats
The engine is noisy. The lack of lubrication makes the engine sound louder and more clattery
